Like Peavine Campground nearby, the Apple Tree Campground is located just off of the Big Pines Highway (Route 2) and features some of the most accessible camping in the Big Pines area of the San Gabriel Mountains. Unlike the more accommodating Mountain Oak Campground, Lake Campground, and Table Mountain Campground, Apple Tree is open year round. The campground features eight first-come, first-served campsites, six of which are walk-in campsites. Many are shaded by large pines that grow on the grounds. Given its proximity to the highway and grounds that are largely free of undergrowth, the campsites are open and lack privacy, though this fault can be mitigated by camping at one of Apple Tree Campground’s walk-in campsites farther away from the highway. The highway may also be noisy. There is officially no potable water at the campground, though some suggestions have been made that water is available at various times during the season. Plan to bring a method of water purification or haul in water.

Apple Tree Campground sees heavy use, so plan accordingly. It provides trail access to Grassy Hollow and the Pacific Crest Trail, and 4N06, a four-wheel drive trail, is nearby. While the campground may not be accessible during winter, especially after heavy snows, Apple Tree Campground's nearby slopes and open spaces offer a snowy playground for sledders and families. In this case, its convenience and ease of access make for an excellent day use area, though visitors are advised to be respectful of campers when present.

Note: Apple Tree Campground is open year round and sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
