Asilomar State Marine Reserve was established as one of several protected areas by the Marine Live Protection Act of 2007. The act was intended to balance the needs of local habitat and wildlife with the reality of an ocean-based economy. The reserves protect the high traffic areas along California's Central Coast for all forms of marine life while still allowing accessible fishing for the community.

Asilomar's shoreline is a rocky cliff that is pocked with tide pools stretching down the west side of Pacific Grove. Hundreds of cormorants flock to the rocks and find protection on their own little island. The area is a fantastic spot to see passing gray whales and dolphins. The cliffs are home to over zealous ground squirrels that aggressively beg for food.

All life along the shores is protected, so do not feed the animals, take living creatures from the tide pools, or fish. Parking is free, and keep in mind that there are no restrooms.
