Big Bald Rock lies near the northern terminus of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California. It is visible from the Sacramento Valley near Oroville as a rocky outcropping within the Plumas National Forest. The rock is a large, exposed portion of the Bald Rock Pluton. Part of the same geologic formation, the nearby Bald Rock Dome plunges over 2,000 feet toward the wild and scenic middle fork of the Feather River. The trail traveling under Bald Rock Dome is a good option for those seeking a longer adventure after exploring Big Bald Rock.

With only a quick half-mile access trail between the parking lot and hard rock, Big Bald Rock is easy to find from the trailhead. As you leave the forested trail and enter the rocky granodiorite playground, be sure to note landmarks so you can find the trail upon returning. Basic route-finding skills and some minor scrambling will allow you to find the high point of the formation which is southwest of the trailhead. A large swath of the Sacramento Valley is visible from most locations on Big Bald Rock, including the Coast Range and the Sutter Buttes.

Big Bald Rock is a fun adventure for those wanting a quick outdoor excursion. Those interested in exploring a little deeper can spend hours zigzagging around the 3,000-foot diameter formation. Many interesting rock formations, born of weathering and exfoliation, are scattered all around Big Bald Rock. The Plumas National Forest also touts Big Bald Rock as a great place to enjoy the night sky.
