Grays Meadow Campground

Grays Meadow Campground sits at an elevation of 6100', located 6 miles west of the town of Independence up Onion Valley Road.

Made up of the smaller Lower Grays Meadow Campground located on a small spur road, and the larger Upper Grays Meadow Campground which is on several loop roads slightly higher up, the Forest Service campground is located along a creek, with a few sites lying immediately creekside, while others are more exposed to the sunlight. Each site contains a table, fire ring, and food locker, with a small flat area for tents or gear.

Winding up Onion Valley Road, the landscape opens up to wide views across the Owens Valley down below. The area is quiet, and there is a good amount of privacy between sites. Water is available at sporadic spigots located throughout the campgrounds. A camp host is available at the upper campground. Some sites have old stone ovens on their fire pits, an interesting relic.

Vault toilets serve the campground. While most sites are reservable through the US Forest Service website, some sites are restricted to walk-in only. Lower Grays Meadow Campground is good for those looking for a quiet experience nestled on a small shaded gravel road, while Upper Grays Meadow Campground has much more of a public campground feel, with small trails leading to the creek.
