The Santa Ana River Valley is a paradise for backpackers, climbers, bikers, and equestrians. Nearby Mount San Gorgonio, otherwise known as “Old Greyback,” is the tallest peak in Southern California, and the trails that weave alongside, up, and in the shadow of the staggering peak and surrounding beauties can keep an adventurer occupied and hungry for more.

Enter Heart Bar Campground. This is an excellent base camp for those with a wild hair or anyone hoping to squeeze a few day hikes into a long weekend. The Santa Ana River Trail and The Wildhorse Creek Trail are the two closest to the campground, and they are relatively easy to tick off your to-do list in a day. The Santa Ana River Trail is highly rated for intermediate mountain bikers and is a well-known and popular singletrack trail in the area.

Situated at 6,880 feet and shaded by towering pines, Hart Bar earns points in the aesthetic department. Additionally, for a campground so big, each site is remarkably spacious and thoughtfully laid out, affording overnighters unexpected privacy. Each site is equipped with tables and campfire rings. Vault toilets and potable water are among the numerous amenities of the campground, as is firewood for purchase. Though there are no RV hookups, there is a dumping station. Although most sites are reservable, there are a number that are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Note: Heart Bar Campground is typically open from mid-May through the end of September. Call 877.444.6777 for seasonal specific open/close dates.
