Hope Valley Outdoors Ski and Snowshoe Center is central to a wide valley that offers a variety of terrain for all ability levels of cross country skier and snowshoers. Based out of a yurt adjacent to the junction of Highways 88 and 89, Hope Valley Outdoors provides gear rentals, ski and snowshoe lessons, and trail maps to the surrounding Hope Valley area, which is a comfortable and less crowded alternative to Kirkwood and Lake Tahoe's resort-style tourism operations. Instead, skiers traveling to Hope Valley will find much quieter trails throughout a more natural setting that crosses a variety of terrain and is accessible to all skill levels. Lessons are given in the flat meadow outside the yurt.

Hope Valley Outdoors offers cross-country ski and snowshoe gear for rent and sale along with lessons and maps of local trail systems, a couple of which begin at the yurt. Hope Valley Outdoors also maintains equipment to track  some of the trails for cross-country skiers - though they only provide tracking for kick and glide skiing and currently do not groom for skate skiers.

The yurt is up through the winter season and is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily during the season. Workers inside the yurt are eager to help out with any questions regarding area trails and conditions, and they can offer current information regarding the trails within their system.

Trails that begin at the yurt include:

  • Burnside Lake Trail (12 miles: intermediate)
  • Hope Valley Trail (5 miles: intermediate)
  • Secret Meadow Trail (3 miles: intermediate)

Additional trails in the area area of varying distances and ability levels include:

More information about gear rentals, sales and lessons, and trail maps can be found here. Hope Valley Outdoors can be reached by phone at 530.721.2015.

Hope Valley Outdoors maintains trails and keeps an outhouse and parking at the yurt using donations from trail users. If you are visiting, consider making a small donation to continue the upkeep of the facilities and trails.
