In 1888, Elisha Bobcock and H.L. Story realized their dream of constructing a world-famous resort by the sea. Complete with a stunning red roof, numerous turrets, an elegant rotunda, and dazzling stained glass windows, the Hotel del Coronado was unrivaled in its beauty. L. Frank Baum, author of the beloved “Wizard of Oz” series, stayed at the hotel for the first time in 1904.  Over the years he spent many months there, during which he penned several books and poems. During the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, President William Taft spent 10 days at the hotel. Other famous visitors include Charlie Chaplin in 1920, Charles Lindbergh in 1927, the Roosevelts in 1935, President Jimmy Carter in 1979, and President Gerald Ford in 1980. Visitors may recognize the Hotel del Coronado from the hit comedy “Some Like It Hot”; the exterior of the hotel was used as a set for the film in 1958.

Today the hotel is a National Historic Landmark. While the historical charm has been preserved in the Victorian building, contemporary rooms are available in Ocean Towers, Beach Village, and the California Cabanas. A plethora of fine dining options await guests, and a variety of treatments are available at the on-site spa. Guests who want to get out and about can choose from a wide range of activities including golf, sailing, a romantic bonfire on the beach, spin class, and the DelVenture Kids Program. Whether you are on a family vacation or a romantic weekend getaway, you will find everything you need at the Hotel del Coronado.

The hotel is situated between Orange Avenue and Coronado Beach. The Coronado Yacht Club on Glorietta Bay is slightly northeast, while Coronado Dog Beach lies to the northwest. Swimmers, surfers, and sunbathers will love the beach access, while guests seeking an educational experience might prefer to check out the nearby Coronado Historical Association. Adventure awaits, and the Hotel del Coronado is the perfect place to find it.
