La Jolla Shores is a great destination for families or beginning surfers. The waves are known to be mild here, perfect for children or those learning to surf. Lifeguards are on duty from 9:00 a.m. until dusk year round. Scuba diving is also allowed, and the beach borders the La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve, with clear waters providing for great visibility. La Jolla Shores is the only beach in San Diego from which you can launch a boat (try kayaking to the La Jolla Sea Caves).

The beach stretches a mile, and it is quite wide, so there's plenty of room to stretch out. Walking north (away from the parking lot) will provide you with less crowds if you'd prefer a little more quiet. Wheelchairs with tires designed for sand are available - see a lifeguard for more information.

Dogs are allowed evenings and mornings from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. spring through fall and from 4 p.m. to 9 a.m. in winter.
