Located only a few blocks west of the California capitol building, the Leland Stanford Mansion State Historical Park is centered around the 19,000-square-foot mansion once owned by Leland and Jane Stanford.
Leland Stanford was involved in politics, serving as California's governor, while also acting as president of the Central Pacific Railroad. Over the years the mansion has served as the governor's mansion as well as a Catholic orphanage, remaining in service as a children's home until 1987.
Presently listed as a National Historic Landmark, the California State Parks system operates the mansion and a small adjacent museum and gift shop today. Free tours take place hourly during open hours, which allow visitors to walk through the mansion, which has been furnished with carpeting, window coverings, artwork, and furniture of the era using Eadweard Muybridge's historical photographs as references. These photos can also be seen throughout the mansion.
Park hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with the last tour of the day beginning at 4 p.m. Tour sizes are limited, and no prior reservations can be made.
