Leucadia State Beach is cradled between Neptune Avenue and the Pacific Ocean. While maps and other official documents refer to this area as Leucadia Beach, you will likely here locals calling it Beacon’s Beach or simply Beacon's for short. If you walk southward, you will eventually reach Moonlight Beach, while South Ponto Beach is about a mile northward. The City of Encinitas runs Leucadia State Beach, but it is owned by the state.  Popular activities include sunbathing, swimming, and surfing. There are no showers or bathrooms, but there are seasonal lifeguards. Parking is free, but spots are limited, so you may have to search around for street parking.

The ocean that borders northern San Diego county is home to a variety of fascinating sea life. The two-spotted octopus, leopard shark, garibaldi (California's state fish), California spiny lobster, bat ray, and California moray eel reside in the waters off the coast here. If you look to the sky, you might catch sight of a cormorant, gull, or great blue heron. It is possible that you might also come across a Pacific harbor seal, California sea lion, or sea otter if you arrive before the beach gets crowded. Keep your eyes open and you could spot some of the beach’s smaller inhabitants such as rove beetles, beach hoppers, and kelp flies.

People are attracted to Leucadia State Beach in particular for a few reasons. First, it tends to be less crowded than some of San Diego’s more well-known beaches. Second, the surf is relatively mellow, which is excellent for anyone hoping to get into the water. Third, the sea cliffs and picturesque white sand make for a breathtaking view. Many people also enjoy checking out the cozy beach town of Leucadia. If you are looking for a laid back way to unwind after a fun day on the beach, head to one of Leucadia’s cozy dive bars.
