Lookout Point

Lookout Point is a little-known overlook on the rim of the San Bernardino rim. Though it accessible by forest roads and a signed junction near the Champion Lodgepole Pine Trailhead, few people come here, and those who do may not stay long. It is certainly worth it to visit for a glimpse of the view, snap a few pictures then get back in the car, but you can't get the full experience without staying overnight.

This is not an official campsite, but dispersed camping is allowed here in San Bernardino National Forest. Be sure to Leave No Trace and obey all fire restrictions. Sunsets from here are nothing short of incredible, and the night sky opens up with the best stargazing in Southern California. High elevation grants clearer air and a much better view.

Remember that this is an alpine environment, so temperatures can drop to surprisingly cold levels, even during the summer. Also, the dirt road may be impassable when wet or icy, so pay attention to conditions. Venturing off the beaten path is a worthy adventure, however, for unrivaled views and relative solitude.
