Mahogany Flat

At the end of Death Valley National Park's highest road you'll find the Mahogany Flat Campground. This rustic camp setting offers simple and undeniably scenic sites for those looking to experience the high mountains of Death Valley.

The campground is accessed via the western side of the Panamint Range. Navigate the tricky access road past the Charcoal Kilns and Wildrose Peak Trailhead in a high-clearance vehicle as the last mile is steep and often rocky and heavily rutted. Ten sites are nestled among the trees along the ridgeline. Each has glimpses or views into Death Valley and beyond into Nevada. Sites come with a picnic table and seats along with a firepit and ample parking space. There is a pit toilet and trash cans in the center of the campground, though there is no water available, either on tap or for filtration.

The campground is primarily used by hikers making the day-long trip along the Telescope Peak Trail, which starts across from the campground entrance. However, you needn't be an avid hiker to enjoy the location's leafy mountain setting, respite from the heat, and unique perspective of Death Valley.

The campground is at nearly 9,000 feet and it is generally closed in the cooler months when it receives snow. If you're considering visting in winter or spring, check with the National Park Service for road conditions and to confirm that the campground is open.
