Martha’s Grove Trail, located within Sycamore Canyon Open Space Park, is a little-known gem that’s perfect for a peaceful getaway from the city.
The trail begins on the eastern side of the parking lot at the end of Sycamore Canyon Road. The first section of the hike is characterized by a gradual descent into the valley through dense chaparral and sage scrub. The trail levels out as it approaches Martha Harville Memorial Oak Grove, which is dedicated to the memory of a park ranger. There is a bench and a picnic table here, making it a great spot for a break. Continue down the path through the valley toward Goodan Ranch, where the Sycamore Canyon Preserve staff often hold educational and interpretive programs. At the windmill, turn right onto the Goodan Ranch access road. Hikers may choose to stay on this route all the way back to the parking lot or take the West Boundary Trail, which ultimately loops back to the same access road. The West Boundary track adds on a mere 0.1 miles and has picturesque views of the surrounding countryside, whereas the access road goes through Goodan Ranch proper.
