This short and scenically sweet trail follows Martis Creek as it snakes through the Martis Creek Basin of Martis Valley near the base of Northstar Resort. Recognized as an official Wildlife Viewing Area, Martis Creek Basin hosts a diversity of ecological zones including meadow, riparian, and pine forest. Wildlife inhabitants range from deer and beaver to a variety of meadow and forest dwelling birds. The trail is popular with both nature lovers and dog walkers.

Martis Creek Trail cuts across the open sagebrush meadow for just under a mile, following and then crossing Martis Creek before ending at the junction with Tompkins Memorial Trail. Expansive mountain views extend in all directions. Northstar dominates the view to the south with its long ski runs while an even more dramatic vista lies westward, encompassing the Sierra Crest and Castle Peak.

For a longer 3-mile loop, consider combining Martis Creek Trail with the Tompkins Memorial Trail or one of the other trails that make up the extensive Martis Creek Basin trail network. Note that bikes are prohibited on the Martis Creek Trail, but they are permitted on others.
