Montana de Oro has many camping options: the Islay Creek developed campground for tents and RVs, group campgrounds, horse campgrounds, and four "environmental" campgrounds that are walk-in tent sites. Two of the sites are located off a spur road north of the visitor center and Spooner's Cove, and two are located off the main park road past Spooner's Cove. All are available for reservations, which are recommended.

The environmental sites are isolated and private in forested areas, but they do require a short walk from the parking area. Hiking trails are adjacent to the sites, and all of them are a short drive to the beaches and coastal trails. No dogs or fires are allowed, and drinking water must be brought in. Sites 1 and 2 are located a quarter mile past Camp KEEP, one of the campuses of the Kern Environmental Education Program, an outdoor education facility for fifth and sixth graders.
