Follow Redwood Creek 3 miles south from Muir Woods National Monument to where it flows into the ocean and you’ll be standing upon yet another iconic landmark named after John Muir, the venerable conservationist: Muir Beach. Tucked into a lovely scenic cove, Muir Beach's quarter-mile stretch of sand is the northernmost beach in the Marin Headlands area.

Providing convenient access for a family coastal outing, Muir Beach offers tide pools, a hidden cove, and connections to some spectacular hiking trails. The views south overlooking the ocean and Marin Headlands hills are breathtaking, particularly in the late winter and early spring when the hills burst with new, verdant life. Head north from where the trail deposits visitors on the beach to explore tide pools, and explore the hidden cove lying beneath the hillside community (the homes detract very little from the majestic setting). Surf fishing is popular here, and although the surf is although typically closed out, surfers sometimes find waves when northwest swell is running and the winds blow offshore from the north or east.

The beach is accessed from a parking lot via the 200-yard trail that crosses over Redwood Creek. Fires are permitted in designated fire pits, and dogs are allowed on leash. Nearby hiking options include the Coastal Trail, which links up with the not-to-be-missed Pirate’s Cove Hiking Trail to the south.
