The American Canyon section for the Napa River Bay Trail is a 2-year-old network of trails located in a former landfill. Part of the trail loops around the landfill, while the old commercial salt ponds are now marshlands teeming with wildlife. In fact, you will see a spectacular amount of bird life here, including egrets, herons, hawks, and various waterfowl. In addition, the unique "Glass Beach" awaits at the river.

There are many different trails you can take in this park, and the full 4-mile, level loop will take you 1-2 hours. After starting on a paved walkway, you will soon veer off onto a large dirt path. Keep an eye out for hawks in the trees above. Once you reach the river, turn left on either of the dirt trails. After a mile or so you will hit Glass Beach. Over the years the currents have deposited piles and piles of sanded glass onto this particular beach, making for a beautiful, multicolored shore.

After leaving the beach, continue south for a 2-mile loop around the old landfill. This section will give you more opportunity to view birds, rabbits, and other wildlife. There are also workout stations along this section. This loop will eventually return to the main trailhead.

Note: Dogs and horses are prohibited on some trails in the park, so be sure to check the information board.
