The Jack and Bernice Newell Open Space Preserve is a 642-acre park set among the hills behind American Canyon. This park has had a rough time since being donated to American Canyon by the Newells in 1999. Stricken by lack of access and funds to finish the trails and signage, the open space was finally opened to hikers and bikers in June, 2014, with the help of local volunteers and boy scouts.

There is currently only one major trail in the park, but since the area is mostly unknown outside of American Canyon locals, it is very likely that you will find yourself alone. The first mile of the hike borders lush green farmland. You will pass a decaying barn nestled at the bottom of a hill. Stop and take in the many photo opportunities here. After another half mile you will reach a fork. This is the beginning and end of the loop. You can take either direction, but starting right will give you immediate views. From here you will climb to an altitude of 830 feet as you hike around the canyon.

After circling the canyon, and once you begin walking under the massive cable towers, you will meet another fork. To the right is Lynch Canyon, another beautiful open space that borders the park. To stay in Newell Open Space, take a left. You will start to descend along the border of the two parks. Go through the gate at the bottom and follow a smaller canyon back to the end of the loop. Enjoy a snack at the picnic tables before retracing your steps back to the parking area.
