Standing tall among the mixed conifer forest of the Sierra Nevada’s western slope, the giant sequoias of Calaveras Big Trees State Park are an impressive site indeed. The North Grove Trail makes exploring the ancient trees easy and accessible, offering a pleasant walking tour of the northern section of the park. Flat and well maintained, the trail is well suited for families and those just looking for an easier hike.

The North Grove Trail loops through colossal sequoias bearing names such as Father of the Forest, the Three Graces, and Old Bachelor. And it until recently the trail passed through the trunk of the Pioneer Cabin tree (the tree was knocked down during a storm early 2017).

At 4,700 feet in elevation, wintertime brings snow to the park when the trail doubles as a ski and snowshoe trail.
