Romana Grasslands County Preserve is a sizable 3,521 acre preserve open to exploration for hikers, cyclists and equestrians. Located in the Santa Maria Valley, the preserve encompasses a variety of terrain including a significant section of Santa Maria Creek, grasslands, wetlands, vernal pools, coastal sage scrub and oak woodlands. Many different plant and animal species are found here as well. 16 of the plants located here are considered special-status species, and there are nearly 40 rare and protected animals that can be found here such as the arroyo toad and the burrowing owl. Notably the preserve also supports over 100 types of birds and 23 butterfly species.

Some of the acreage within the preserve is closed to visitors to help protect sensitive resources. But a fair amount can be explored via the two main trails here, the 0.8 mile Meadow Loop and the 2 mile Wildflower Loop. In addition a 6 mile long old survey road also winds through the preserve, but is only open for 3 months out of the year on designated days. There are also a few picnic areas with tables throughout the preserve, including at the trailhead.
