This short and easy loop hike in Devils Postpile National Monument is very rewarding and offers a lot for minimal effort. It is a great hike for families too.

The hike starts at the simple picnic area on a low bluff overlooking the lake (shuttle stop #7). As a loop it can be hiked in either direction, but it is a bit easier to navigate going counter-clockwise. After a flat section along the lake, the trail climbs a few switchbacks to the top of a small granite knoll above the lake. There are great views of the far shore and the granite hillside beyond. Climbing down to lake level, the trail crosses the outlet creek, and just past this is a lovely small waterfall.

The trail on the far side of the lake can be swampy in spots, but there are many places to reach the shore and admire the view. Overall this is a great way to spend an hour with modest effort and nice scenery.
