Only five locations exist in Patrick's Point State Park where visitors can safely explore the coastline. The coastal access at Wedding Rock is one such location, and like three others, it is completely devoid of sand. Though some may see this as a negative aspect, many will find the tide pooling rewards and possibilities for exploration worth the short walk. The best location for exploring tide pools at this location are behind the massive boulder sitting between Wedding Rock and the sheer cliff that extends into the ocean. Just behind this boulder a small haven is created that protects most organisms from the direct impact force of the waves. At low tides shore crabs, sea stars, anemone, snails, and hermit crabs are frequently found in these pools. Just remember it is illegal to disturb any wildlife within the park.
Not only does the massive boulder create a perfect tide pooling location, it also is an incredible place to sit and enjoy the ocean views. The climb to the top of this rock is steep, but during larger swells massive waves break against the rock's side and make the entire rock shake! This rock is also a favorite place for local fishermen as it sits far enough out into the ocean but does not carry the normal risks of getting wet.
