Whitney Portal Recreation Area is the gateway to hike or climb Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the continental United States. The area is managed by the Inyo Nation Forest and contains a hiking trail into the John Muir Wilderness, surrounding Sierra Nevada Mountains, and neighboring Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park. The campground in the Whitney Portal Recreation Area provides a base for those acclimating to hike or climb Mount Whitney or to simply relax in the cool mountain air above the hot summer desert of Alabama Hills in the Owens River Valley.

The main area is centered around the Whitney Portal Store in a pine forest at 8,000 feet along Lone Pine Creek. Watch for black bear, mule deer, pine martin, and pika. This is an especially active bear area, so be aware, and keep food stored in the provided bear lockers. Whether you are looking for a serious hike into the Eastern Sierra Nevada or just want to camp in the shadow of Mount Whitney, Whitney Portal Recreation Area is a classic destination that has amazing views for everyone.

Note that there is no winter access on Whitney Portal Road.
