Alta Lakes Recreation Area is a popular spot near Telluride that offers primitive campsites, fishing, and paddling in a tiny lake at the foot of Silver Mountain and Palmyra Peak. The campsites are free and first-come, first-served. This is a tent-only campground and the access road is fairly rough in spots and requires a high-clearance vehicle. Some of the campsites are right on the lake or offer lake views with the lofty peaks rising behind.
