There are a lot of great paved or gravel bike routes in the Telluride area, including segments of the Galloping Goose Trail, the Telluride town trail and this rough gravel road leading to the Alta Lakes Recreation Area.

Starting at Highway 135 just a mile or so south of the excellent Sunshine Campground, Alta Lakes Road has some great views, especially on the lower section. There is some auto traffic going to Alta Lakes, but the road is wide enough and traffic is light. About 4 miles up, the road passes through the interesting ghost town site of Alta and the road ends at the lovely namesake group of lakes with a primitive camping area and good paddling and fishing.
