For the young and young at heart, Carter Park in the town of Breckenridge offers free thrills on its sledding hill for those seeking an affordable alternative to skiing or snowboarding.

The park features an indoor banquet area, outdoor pavilion patio, picnic tables, tennis courts, volleyball courts, baseball fields, restrooms, dog park, trail system, and a sledding hill with Breckenridge Ski Resort as a backdrop. To get there from Main Street, take Lincoln Street four blocks east, then turn south on High Street. Go three blocks until the street dead-ends in the parking lot.

The walk-up, slide-down sledding hill is wide, smooth, and scenic. Just be aware of snow conditions, as icy hardpack can result in faster speeds and less control. Crowds tend to build throughout the day, so arrive early to enjoy the fresh snow. Sleds cannot be purchased or rented at the park, but they are available at many local shops, City Market on Park Avenue, or Breckenridge Market and Liquor on Ridge Street.

Since sledding is not allowed at the ski resort, Carter Park offers a perfect alternative for those in search of snow and smiles.
