With easy access to downtown and situated just north of Commons Park and Confluence Park, City of Cuernavaca Park is a welcome oasis to the concrete proliferation of downtown Denver. Because it’s a bit more tucked away than the other two, it typically sees a bit less foot traffic, and it’s easier to claim a spot on a warm, sunny day.

Picnic pavilions adjacent to the expansive lawns on the north edge of the park are first-come, first-served, and you’ll hardly ever see it unoccupied on a nice weekend. If you hope to claim a spot, plan strategically to arrive early.

The park is named for its sister city, Cuernavaca, Mexico, which is situated at the same mile-high elevation as Denver. What was once decrepit industrial land has now been designed to be an undulating topographical open-air park complete with a rock garden, several pedestrian bridges, and plenty of space. The baseball diamond hosts recreational kickball and softball leagues during the warmer seasons, so unless you’re looking to be entertained, it’s best to avoid the crowds during this time—parking can be a huge hassle.

Dogs are allowed within the park on-leash, and there are typically a number of joggers and pedestrians with their pets. Because it’s a bit less traveled and more removed from downtown than Commons Park and Confluence Park, many joggers (especially female) have noted that this is one of the safer places to workout alone in the city. If you have a wild hair, or feel like a long bike ride, the 18-mile-long South Platte River Trail passes through the park and connects the city of Thornton with Englewood.
