Fourmile Stock Trail to Fourmile Falls is a breathtaking 6.0-mile out-and-back hike that is moderate to strenuous with a slow and gradual net elevation gain of 1,100 feet. Located north of Pagosa Springs in the San Juan National Forest, this amazing trail takes you through elevated forests, open meadows, creek crossings, and misted waterfall basins. Fourmile Stock Trail is best viewed and accessed from May through October. With snow melts in early summer, these two giant neighboring waterfalls run heavily into Fourmile Creek. Later in the summer season, in late July and early August, wildflowers flourish throughout the valley.
Accessing the trailhead is another adventure itself. From Pagosa Springs, drive 13 miles north from town on CR-400 4 Mile Road, which turns onto CR-645, untill you reach the trailhead parking lots. The first lot is a large open space with a bathroom, and the second lot is only a 100 yards up the road. Both have signage to the Fourmile Stock Trail. The gravel drive does not require high-clearance or four-wheel drive. However, heavy rain or snow will make road conditions difficult for cars. For road and trail conditions, check in at the San Juan National Forest Center in downtown Pagosa Springs.
