Hahns Peak Lake Area

The trailhead for Hahns Peak and the other Hahns Peak Lake area trails can be found just a few minutes north of the Steamboat Lake Recreation area outside of Clark. This is a popular area for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and backcountry skiing or snowboarding, but it shouldn't be over looked during Colorado's other prime seasons as it provides great summer and fall recreation options as well.

Hahns Peak, a now extinct volcano, is the mountain with the old lookout structure at its very tip. It was named after Joseph Hahns, a German immigrant who found traces of gold in a nearby creek in 1862. This area boomed in the 1860s during Colorado's gold and silver rush, but it became a ghost town along with many of Colorado's early mining towns. A museum and several historic buildings are accessible below Hahns Peak and just across from the Steamboat Lake State Park for those looking to further educate themselves on the rich history of the area. 

From the parking area for the trailhead the trail can be taken to the left, the right, or across the road to find the Hahns Peak Trail. Taking the path to the right leads into an open valley area where multiple tracks can be followed or blazed. Taking the trail to the left from the parking area follows the more predominant road track toward Hans Peak Lake. The options are really boundless in this area, and the freedom to explore won't be disappointing.
