Durango is something of an outdoor mecca, with abundant mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, and four-wheel drive trails surrounding the city, not to mention the outdoor opportunities in the beautiful San Juan Mountains less than an hour’s drive north.

Located five minutes outside of Durango along Junction Creek and offering 44 campsites, Junction Creek Campground is ideally positioned for adventures in the Durango area. Junction Creek Campground also offers a sprawling day use area above Junction Creek with a volleyball sand trap, picnic tables, a covered pavilion for group use, horseshoe alleys, and a large barbecue pit.

Perhaps attributable to its proximity to Durango, Junction Creek Campground is busy, so be sure to make reservations early if possible. Its 44 campsites are split into four loops, and 29 sites are available for reservation. Loops A and B offer sites suitable for tents and small RVs, but Junction Creek Campground’s slope along these loops makes sites here less than ideal. Loops C, D, and E offer the most appealing sites, most of which are well-shaded and level, and those on Loop E offer electrical hookups. Sites along the outside rim of Loop E are especially appealing and offer shade, hookups, level sites with tent pads, and an orientation toward the forest surrounding Junction Creek Campground, meaning more privacy.

Regardless of human activity, the campground is a hotbed of animal activity and sees regular bear visitation. Abert’s squirrel, a fascinating species with long, pointed ears, can be found bounding between campsites and among tree limbs throughout the campground.

Junction Creek Campground is typically open from May to late September. Double campsites, of which there are four, cost $32 per night.
