Kelsey is one of two campgrounds in the Buffalo Creek Recreation Area about an hour's drive southwest of Denver. Located at an elevation of over 8,000 feet, Kelsey Campground offers a wonderful opportunity for visitors to enjoy a variety of recreational opportunities, including hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking and trout fishing. The Buffalo Creek Recreation Area is home to a 40-mile trail system most popular with mountain bikers, and access to the Colorado Trail and the Buffalo Burn Trail begin from this campground's trailhead. Little Scraggy and the Shinglemill Trail is also nearby and worth checking out if you have time. Wildlife is also abundant in the surrounding areas: expect the campground to be alive with red tailed hawks, Colorado chipmunks, and Albert's squirrels.
The campground offers single-family sites, some of which are designated for tent camping only. Each site is equipped with picnic tables and campfire rings with grills. Vault toilets are provided and drinking water is available from a hand pump, but hookups are not available. This area is lush in tree cover to provide ample shade, even during the hottest of days. Host is available on-site.
Views from the valley will thrill you with the majestic beauty of Pikes Peak looming in the distance. For a welcome break from enjoying this pristine area, take a short drive down Highway 126 to the South Platte River district to enjoy some time cooling down in rugged waters near Cathedral Spires.
