If you're ever looking for break from the snow during the Colorado winter, the Oil Well Flats Mountain Bike Trail System provides a fantastic getaway that seems almost like a Fruita in the Front Range. Located just an hour from Colorado Springs, this is a relatively new and still developing trail system. Since it is so new, be aware the trail routes and connectors might change frequently as this land is still being developed.

Even when the Front Range is buried in snow, this trail system can be dry, sandy, and sunny all winter long, providing an excellent getaway for winter singletrack riding. Most of the biking you'll find here combines excellent cross-country routes with challenging and technical obstacles. There are plenty of sandy features for you to lose traction on in the corners, lots of big sharp rocks that you need to negotiate or conquer both uphill and down, and a surprising number of thorns. So many, in fact, it’s suggested you run extra sealant in your tires or absolutely bring a tire patch or spare.

You'll be delighted by how much these trails seem like they belong on the western slope. Be sure to incorporate the Unconformity and Island in the Sky trails into your ride. This trail system is a welcome addition to biking in the southern parts of the Front Range.
