Park Point is the highest point in Mesa Verde National Park, providing visitors with unobstructed 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The views are breathtaking all through the year, but in some seasons they can be obstructed by natural haze and pollution. The vistas can be reached by walking a moderately steep but easy trail for just 0.2 miles. The trail is paved and can be accessed with a wheelchair. Park Point is one of the best places to watch the sunset or sunrise in all of Mesa Verde National Park. It's also a favorite destination of artists and photographers.
The views from Park Point include Mount Wilson and Lone Cone to the north, the La Plata Range to the east, Hogback, Shiprock, and Lukachukai Mountains to the south, and the Montezuma Valley and Sleeping Ute Mountain to the west. The views include rugged canyons and mesas - the backdrop for the large concentration of prehistoric Pueblo ruins that are located within Mesa Verde National Park.
The fire lookout tower is manned by a National Park Service ranger during the critical fire season. The ranger is charged with looking out for fires after thunderstorms and pinpointing the location. The ranger also projects weather conditions and the possibility of fires that may result. The fire lookout can not be accessed by the public.
The parking area at Park Point includes vault toilets and picnic tables.
