There are several national forest campgrounds around Dillon Reservoir, and all are pretty nice. Prospector is located high above the lake and is the furthest campground from town, which can be a pro or con depending on one's perspective. The campground was clear-cut about ten years ago to remove beetle-damaged trees, so it has a very open feeling and fantastic views of the surrounding mountains. Overall it is a very pleasant campground due to the space between sites.

The campground has five loops, with Loop E and Loop D being best for larger RVs. Loop D has the most lake view sites and the closest access (via a steep trail) to the water. There is drinking water near the entrance but no dump station, and it is recommended for RVs to arrive with a full water tank. This campground seems to be a weekend destination (due to its proximity to Denver), and there are a lot of open sites during the week. Reservations are a must on weekends.

There is much to do in this area, from boating and fishing on Dillon Lake to hiking and mountain biking in the surrounding mountains. The towns of Silverthorne, Dillon, Frisco, and Breckenridge are all within a half-hour drive and offer bountiful recreation and social activities. Prospector Campground makes a wonderful home base for exploring that feels worlds apart from the surrounding towns.
