The Spur Line Trails are a fun and easy pair of trails that combine to make a nearly 5-mile loop through a meandering meadow. They are among the newest trails added to greater Durango. While there are several fun rollers and slight bank turns, the trail is mostly flat and perfect for beginners or intermediate riders looking for easy-to-access exercise.
Near the start of the trail, you will make your way through a few groves of loosely packed trees, but most of the terrain is wide open with mountain views in the distance. The singletrack is smooth and well maintained, and the Spur Lines have become a favorite with locals who are not looking for the intense downhills or technical terrain that is more common in the Horse Gulch/Telegraph systems. There is ample parking and even a small skills course with a few short jumps near the entrance.
The 1.8-mile Switcher Loop starts off from the trailhead and consists of the southern end of the pair, while Rail Spike Loop is 2.5 miles and sits at the northern end. Most people combine the two because of their short distances, but there is an option to cut it in half. The skills park consists only of a few small jumps, but it sits near the trailhead. Most people follow the loop in a counter-clockwise fashion and connect both trails into one ride. Keep an eye out for the ample wildflowers and wildlife that is common in Durango, such as hummingbirds, hawks, deer, or elk.
