Tucked beneath the aspen trees and nestled alongside Hot Springs Creek you'll find one of the most impressive natural hot springs in the country, Strawberry Hot Springs. Though the spring is natural, the area around the springs has been built up extensively. The masonry work was done with care, and it fits well within the natural surroundings.

There are five pools ranging in temperatures, from the cool water of the creek that flows through to 104 degrees in the top pool. Though smaller, the upper pools seem to be the coolest pools apart from the creek itself. Located just 15 minutes from Steamboat Springs, this is a popular destination year round. In the summer months the area fills with families coming to enjoy the cool creek pool and soak up the sun. In the winter months, skiers make their way to the springs after a day on the slopes. If you're in the mood, there are private areas for massages and for Watsu. There are limited concessions available, and food is only allowed in picnic areas.

The spring is open daily from 10:00 a.m. through 10:30 p.m. and until 12:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. There is no entry after 9:30 p.m. during the week and 10:30 p.m. on the weekends. Youth are not allowed after dark at any time. The best way to experience the springs is to get there early or stay overnight at one of the accommodations. There are tent areas, a couple of covered wagons, three rustic cabins, a caboose, and a few larger cabins available for overnight stays. The springs are open to overnight guests until midnight and from dawn on. If you want to enjoy a quiet soak, stay overnight and make your way to the pools before 10:00 a.m. Visit the Strawberry Hot Springs website for information on booking overnight stays. You'll need to mail your requests with payment in order to book.

A few items to note:

  • Youth (ages 3 through 17) are only allowed in the daylight hours.
  • Vendors accept cash or check only, no cards.
  • The road to the springs can be rough in the winter months, four-wheel drive with snow tires or chains are required November 1 through May 1.
  • Dogs are not allowed on the property, and the parking lot offers little shade. It's best to leave your four-legged friends at home.
