The Christ Memorial Episcopal Church in the small town of Kilauea is a historic and active place of worship that is ripe with beauty and wonder. The lava rock construction is a stunning example of classic stone architecture, and the interior is adorned with stained glass windows you would only expect to find in a much larger or more expensive church. The building was completed and consecrated in 1941, but the surrounding graveyard is much older, with headstones dating back to the late 1800s. Make sure to stop by when visiting the nearby Kilauea Lighthouse, but please be respectful of the congregation that still worships here. The church is lined with beautiful native and non-native flowers as well as many large trees. The entire setting is breathtaking and spiritual, a refuge that harkens back to old Hawai‘i and the early foundations of the Church of England in the state.
