Chun's Reef Beach is a well-known stretch of sand on the North Shore of O'ahu, and it has become quite popular among surfers. Named after John Chun, an avid surfer from the area, the site's soft bottom and deep reef are perfect for beginner and intermediate surfers who don't have to worry as much about damaging their boards on sharp, shallow rocks. The nearby channel also makes paddling out to the lineup easier in high surf conditions. For beach-goers, there are typically far fewer people on this stretch of beach than most nearby beaches. The west-facing views are also perfect for watching the sun go down over Ka'ena Point. Relax with a picnic blanket or beach chairs and watch the surfers catch waves, or take a lesson from an experienced school! The beach park has limited parking, especially on weekends, when surf school companies dominate the roadside. Chun's Reef has a life guard station as well as some portable toilets and picnic areas for families. The rocky shoreline on either side of the beach offer some interesting opportunities for exploring tide pools and witnessing some unique Hawaiian intertidal sea creatures. Be aware that during the winter months, seasonal wave swells are much larger. Do not enter the water if conditions are unsafe.
