Keiki Beach near the town of Kona is a small crescent shaped sandy beach with black rocks protecting the shore from harsh surf, which creates a lot of shallow pools and ideal conditions for families looking to take little ones to the beach.
The destination can be a bit confusing, as the beach is referred to as Keiki Beach Queen's Bath, however this is a completely different area than Kuki'o Beach which is popularly called Keiki Beach, and this is not the Queen's Bath formation within the Kiholo Bay area. This Keiki Beach lies just a few minutes north of Kona, and can be a bit hidden as it is nestled in a housing development.
The beach itself can be a tranquil spot with shallow pools in the bay as well as the black rock formations surrounding it. It is very popular with families, and you'll likely see plenty of parents in beach chairs while the children explore some of the pools in the nearby area. These shallow black rock pools extend north from the bay, and heat the water even more than the tropical currents in case you're looking for a shallow natural hot tub to sit in.
There are no showers, bathrooms or water at the beach. It's not the simplest beach to find, which might be intentional on the part of the housing development that surrounds it, however Hawai'i custom states that all beaches are public, so those visiting can easily get to the beach from a short walk.
To access the beach, visitors can park in the lot next to the fields opposite the south-facing entrance to Kekuaokalani Gymnasium in the large community park immediately west of Kailua Bay. Pass through the soccer field heading in an 11 O'Clock direction. From here a clear footpath will cross the road through the housing development, leading a signed right of way. The walk takes no more than 5 minutes.
Visitors should be aware that the public access gate is locked from 8pm to 6am daily.
