If you are looking for a super mellow and no-frills campsite to be near a beautiful beach, then this is your place. Kokololio is a 5-site campground that consists of not much more than grass lawns that you can throw a tent on. There is an outdoor shower and bathrooms, but that is about it—except for that idyllic large white sand beach dotted with palm trees a few yards away.

There are not many places in America where you can wake up to the sunrise coming up over the ocean for a few bucks, but this is one of them. Kokololio means "gusty" in Hawaiian, and this end of the island can get pretty windy with the onshore trade winds. Summertime has glassy flat water, but winter can get some serious shore break.

On the north end of the beach is a limestone rock feature called Pali Kiloi'a, meaning “fish-spotter cliff” in Hawaiian. In the old days people used this cliff to locate fish in the bay to give directions to net fishermen out in the canoes. Nearby attractions include the Polynesian Cultural Center, BYU Hawaii, the North Shore of Oahu about 15 minutes north, and Kualoa Ranch 20 minutes south. There is less activity here than in much of O'ahu, and the seclusion gives you more of a small-town feel than Honolulu or Kailua.

Keep an eye on your valuables, especially if you are swimming offshore. Campsites are available for reservations here.
