If you are staying in Kailua-Kona, La'aloa Bay Beach Park is one of your best bets for an easily accessible day at the beach. Located on Ali'i Drive just 4 miles south of the Kailua Pier, this small beach boasts fine white sand, a break that's great for boogie boarding and body surfing, and all of the supporting amenities such as showers and restrooms. This beach is also known as Magic Sands or Disappearing Sands because the sand here is transient; large storms are known to denude the beach, leaving behind the lava rock base. Gradually the sand is redeposited with wave action, and it always remains on the ocean floor.
While the beach is small, there is room enough for a volleyball net. The rocks are popular for snorkeling, as well, and lifeguards are on site. But the most popular pursuit by far is to lay out and enjoy the sun at this relaxing Kona Beach. Be prepared for company, of course, as the proximity and atmosphere make this a popular stop. Parking can be a challenge.
