Just a short distance up an overgrown jungle trail is Likeke Falls, a 15-foot multi-tiered cascade that is fed by the daily rains that pelt the area. As cool air approaches the islands from the east, they run into the Ko'olau Mountains, which almost always have clouds covering their peaks. On days with heavy rain you can see waterfalls in every direction coming down the previously dry valleys and cliffsides. Likeke flows every day, however, and it is such a short hike that it's a must for windward-side adventurers. Just like all the hikes in the area, you will be amazed by how many different species of flora and fauna are packed into every square foot. Mountain apple, orchids, ferns, giant banyan trees, wild torch ginger, bird-of-paradise, guava, and ʻōhiʻa lehua are just a few species to watch for. Native Hawaiian songbirds are small but so colorful; bring your birding binoculars if you get the chance.

There are several ways to get to the falls, but this is the quickest and most direct. It can still be a little tricky: Many people miss the final right turn at the large white tree with initials carved into it. Wild boar have become more plentiful on the island over the years, especially on this side. Keep your eyes and ears peeled and do not approach them. You might want to bring your mosquito repellent. Be prepared for slippery and muddy conditions, and keep in mind that the red soil of Hawai'i stains your gear. Leave the expensive stuff at home.
