Tunnels Beach has a reputation for some of the best snorkeling in all of Kauai…which is a big statement. The ideal snorkeling conditions are thanks in part to an inner and outer reef, which provide layers of protection from the strong ocean current as and a healthy habitat for abundant sea life.

In addition to the snorkeling, Tunnels Beach is also a go-to destination for scuba diving and surfing. In regards to the surfing, this beach is known by many as the location of the infamous Bethany Hamilton shark attack that resulted in her losing her arm. Despite this unfortunately incident, there is a low rate of shark attack occurrences at Tunnels Beach. Statistically speaking, you are much more likely to get into a car accident than to be attacked by a shark.

Pertaining to the sea life in the area, besides the occasional shark sighting, this area is known for a large array of fish as well as large sea turtles.
