Exploring the McCall/Riggins area of Idaho would be incomplete without a stop at Burgdorf Hot Springs. Established in 1870 by Fredrick Burgdorf, after dreams of striking it rich in gold stumbled, Burgdorf Hot Spring was Idaho’s first destination resort known for fine dining and hospitality. The original a 25-room hotel still lies in ruin on the site. Later, Burgdorf became a thriving hippie commune in the 1960s.

Today, Burgdorf Hot Springs offer a remote backcountry experience for day trips or rustic overnight stays. The pools are open, and cabin rentals are available 365 days per year; however, during winter the road is only accessible by snowmobile. The main swimming pool is maintained at 100 degrees year-round, and two smaller pools by the inlet are roughly 113 degrees.

The lodge has a restaurant with a small but satisfying menu that is available from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. during winter weekdays). You can bring in your own food and drinks to enjoy around the pool. Trash must be packed out.

Burgdorf offers 15 cabin rentals that can accommodate between two and 15 people. Cabins are clean and well maintained, but very basic. Each has a wood stove, firewood, beds and basic furnishings. Pack your own bedding, food, cooking supplies and lighting. During the winter, bring subzero sleeping bags and be prepared to stoke the fire through the night.

Visit Bergdorf’s website for information about cabin rentals and pool closure days.
