At 10,339 feet, Cache Peak is the highest mountain in the Albion Range and the highest mountain in Idaho south of the Snake River. With 4,459 feet of prominence, it is also the sixth most topographically prominent peak in the state, falling just 41 feet short of qualifying as an ultra-prominent peak. Nevertheless, Cache Peak is a very enjoyable hike and a beautiful oasis that rises high above the surrounding desert.

One of the most interesting features of the mountain is the basin between it and it's close neighbor to the north, 9,950-foot Mount Independence. This basin is heavily forested and contains a number of mountain lakes that are a somewhat popular destination for backpackers. While the mountain is prominent and highly visible, visitation is very light compared to the nearby City of Rocks National Reserve, which draws the majority of the visitors to the area. For those willing to leave the Reserve and venture out a bit farther, Cache is a great diversion from all the City of Rocks has to offer. It is recommended to combine an ascent of Cache Peak with its nearby twin, Mount Independence. It adds negligible distance and elevation gain while providing excellent views of Cache Peak and the lakes below.
