The tiny town of Stanley, Idaho (population 63), is located in the heart of the Sawtooth Mountain country and a short distance from four large wilderness areas. The area has incredible recreation opportunities, including hiking, horse packing, mountain biking, river running, lake activities, and just kicking back and enjoying the beautiful scenery. Some of the best camping options in the area are the four little campgrounds located just east of Stanley along the Salmon River: Salmon River, Casino Creek, Riverside and Mormon Bend. They all have their own character and features, but all are very nice campgrounds.

Salmon River Campground is the closest to Stanley and has some of the nicest riverside campsites. Several of the sites have great views of the river and close access to the shore. The campground has two loops, one on the river side of the highway and one on the opposite side. The river sites fill up first, of course, and traffic noise can be an issue in some of the other sites closer to the road. Several of the sites are quite large, and big RVs can fit in them. There tends to be an even mix of tent campers and RVers, but this is a very quiet campground. Vault toilets and hand-pumped drinking water are available.

All four of these campgrounds are first-come, first-served only, and the best sites fill up early. The riverside loop closes in mid-August to protect the spawning salmon in the river.
