Lead Lake Camping Area

Lead Lake Camping Area is one of two designated primitive campgrounds inside Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge.

The camping area is in the center of several lakes, and as such is a hub of bird and wildlife activity. Several of the refuge's lakes, including Willow Lake and Tule Lake are located adjacent to the campground, with boat ramps to both nearby. Visitors will need to check with the refuge for which lakes permit which types of boats in. 

The camping area is simply a wide patch of dirt. There is a vault toilet and trash can, however no other amenities and no shade for campers.

Set in the middle of these lakes, nighttime brought the group howls of coyotes echoing through the air, and many of the refuges birds and owls flying through the air. However the insects here were pervalents. Mosquitoes were everywhere. 

For those looking to spend the night amongst the refuge's wildlife population, Lead Lake is the better choice. Those looking for a quieter night an a seasonally more dry area of the park with fewer mosquitoes might prefer Division Road Camping Area.

There is no fee to camp, and seeing very few visitors, campers here may likely find they have the whole area to themselves. Dogs are permitted if on leash. There is no water anywhere in the refuge, including here. Campfires are not permitted.
