Grosse Savanne Eco-Tours offers a wide range of tours on their privately owned land that spans 50,000 acres in southern Louisiana just south of Lake Charles. Their private land is conveniently located along the beautiful Creole Nature Trail—the 180-mile scenic byway that passes through Louisiana’s Outback. The types of tours offered include a marsh boat tour, a birding and nature tour, and customized tours. Grosse Savanne also has strategically placed photography blinds for viewing birds and other wildlife found in their rookeries. Each tour can be booked for 2 hours, a half-day, or a full day.

The marsh boat tours begin from Savanne Grosse's private boathouse located just down the street from their Chalkley Road office location. The water in the marsh is clearer than the surrounding rivers and bayous, which offers glimpses at the wildlife just underneath the surface of the water. Adventurists can hope to see some of the area’s 30 or so species of reptiles and amphibians on this tour, including alligators, turtles, and several frog species. This tour winds through the 500 acres of brackish marsh water.

The outfit's birding and nature tour takes guests through some pristine swamp habitat and agricultural fields that offer viewing opportunities of a full range of wildlife species in southern Louisiana. There are great wildlife viewing opportunities throughout the year in this area, but this particular tour with Grosse Savanne Eco-Tours will yield the best results in early to midspring. Spring is also a great time to see the shy and elusive alligators sunning themselves on the banks of the levees. In mid- to late April, there are spectacular displays of migratory birds nesting in their rookeries. When timed right, guests can expect to see hundreds of colorful roseate spoonbills and great egrets during the aforementioned weeks in April. Certain types of waterfowl are most numerous in the winter months.

Custom tours include but are not limited to sunrise/sunset tours, native coastal prairie tours, beach excursions, chenier vehicle tours, canoe trips, kayak trips, and more. Visit their website or call 337.310.4260 for more information. Grosse Savanne Eco-Tours is located in Bell City, Louisiana, just south of Lake Charles.
