While Assateague Island National Seashore may span two states, only the Maryland side has a campground. The campground is split into multiple loops, with three loops on the bay side of the island, two drive-in loops, and three walk-in loops. All of these spots will give the camper a different experience on the island.

On the bayside loops, some of the campsites boast great views of the bay and have lots of shade, whereas others are just open plots of grass. Since there are no hookups on the island, generators are common in the bay loops; however, loop B is a generator-free zone. Bayside loops are great if you plan to spend a lot of time kayaking.

The campground's oceanside camping loops really shine. These sites range from small patches of sand to almost-hidden spots within the dunes. All oceanside camping loops have a wooden walkway leading to the ocean, showers, and vault toilets.

Assateague Island is famous for its wild horses, which often roam the campgrounds in search of human food. While some oceanside walk-in sites have horse-proof lockers to store your food, many do not. It is important for the horses and your own safety to store all food away when not in use, as human food can cause serious illness or death to the wild horses.

If camping during the spring, summer, or early fall, plan on bringing a lot of bug spray, as the mosquitoes can be quite obnoxious in the dunes.
