Known to many as the greatest sunset location on Martha’s Vineyard and for its appearance in the movie "Jaws," Menemsha Beach attracts locals and tourists alike. Menemsha beach attracts lots of people, and with the marvelous sunset, trails and eateries, its easy to see why.
Menemsha Beach is located at the end the Menemsha fish market and boat docks. There is lots of free parking here, although these spots tend to fill up fast. As you make your way across the parking lot, you will pass many local fish stores that sell anything from whole lobsters to chowder that you could purchase and enjoy while watching the sunset. There is some soft sand at the top of the beach area; however, the farther you go into the beach, depending on tides, the more pebbles that cover the beach. There are no large waves at Menemsha Beach, and with lifeguards on duty, it is a great spot for families. Also, if you are there earlier in the day and have no sunset to witness, there is a trail path that leads to the Menemsha Hills Trail, which is a 3.2-mile moderately difficult trail.
There is also a large breakwater that separates the beach and the boat docks. Note that the space between the breakwater and the boats is very dangerous, and electrocution is a factor should you go into that water. There are signs and fences warning of this danger; just be mindful when bringing curious children.
